Skills Before Screens | August Teacher Spotlight
Our Skills Before Screens Spotlight Teacher of the Month for August is Stephanie Spencer, 8th grade Social Studies teacher at Granville Central Middle School!
This month’s featured strategy was the Gallery Walk, and Ms. Spencer used it to engage students in an “archaeological evidence” exploration of the daily lives of Native Americans during the Mississippian period. Students rotated through four stations, examining images and considering: What do I observe? What might this tell us? What questions do I have? After exploring the evidence, students used their observations to make a “historian’s claim” and support it with evidence from one of the stations.
This lesson is a great example of how Skills Before Screens encourages students to actively observe, question, analyze, and apply their learning.
Congratulations, Ms. Spencer, and thank you for creating meaningful opportunities for students to think like historians!
