Early Childhood Programs

Welcome to GCPS Early Childhood Programs
We believe learning begins long before a child enters Kindergarten and PARENTS are the first teachers.

  • Pre-Kindergarten is a place that turns ordinary experiences into extraordinary moments of learning!  Play is very important in establishing a learning environment for young children.  Granville County Public Schools’ Pre-K programs provide developmentally appropriate environments for daily activities, while providing children the support and experiences needed to prepare them for Kindergarten.

Our Pre-K programs use the comprehensive curriculum, Creative Curriculum, as a basic structure for the day.  The school day includes activities related to the following areas:

    • Literacy Center supports access to many different types of books and opportunities for listening and storytelling.
    • Art Center affords an area for creative artistic expression and eye-hand coordination development through many varied materials.
    • Block/Building Center encourages building, designing, cooperative play and math exploration.
    • Dramatic Play Center presents an area for social interaction and role-playing.  This is where imaginations take flight.
    • Science Center offers an area for observation, experimentation and encourages curiosity.
    • Writing Center provides pre-writing materials, story dictation, bookmaking and exploration with print and illustrations.
    • Manipulative Center encourages active learning with games, pattern blocks, counting materials and other items that promote problem solving and mathematical exploration.
    • Technology Center provides learning through software aligned to the curriculum.
    • Music Center encourages creative movement and imagination development.

    Pre-K Application Process

    When can I apply?
The PreK application period begins in late winter/early spring each year. Priority will be given to applications received on or before the last day of the school year.  Pre-K applications received after the last day of school will be placed on the waiting list for the program year.  We encourage you to apply early!

    What makes a complete application?

    • Completed application form
    • Childs's certified Birth Certificate
    • Proof of address (acceptable proof of address includes utility bill, lease or rental agreement, property tax, and /or property deed)
    • Documentation of income (tax records,  1 recent month of paystubs, letter from employer, etc)

When will I find out if my child is enrolled in Pre-K?

After screening in May/June, a selection committee will put together Pre-K class rosters based upon federal- and state-mandated eligibility requirements.  Families will be contacted regarding their enrollment status as soon as possible over the summer, typically in August as we wait for confirmation of funding for the program.  Pre-K staff will call families of those children selected for enrollment in a Pre-K classroom.  Families of children not enrolled in the program will receive a notification letter through the mail.

I turned in the Pre-K application.  What happens next?  Click here for more information.

  • What is Parents as Teachers?
The GCPS Parents as Teachers (PAT) program is grant-funded by Franklin-Granville-Vance Smart Start and serves families in all three counties.

Program staff provide home visits and parent education to families with children ages birth to five.  PAT services will be focused on the following areas:

    • nurturing positive parenting behavior,
    • promoting healthy child development and school readiness, and
    • supporting parent and family well-being.
