Elementary Education

Overview

The Granville County Public Schools Elementary Instructional Program is based on the Standard Course of Study as prescribed by the North Carolina Department of Education and builds a strong foundation for learning throughout a student's life.  We are committed to excellence and achievement for all; therefore, we work to ensure that each elementary student receives an equitable, rigorous, and relevant education.  Elementary teachers provide a caring and nurturing environment where our students can successfully learn to be productive citizens.

In addition to classroom instruction, all elementary schools provide extracurricular activities for our students such as a county-wide spelling bee, Spanish, arts and crafts, robotics and coding, gardening, singing, bowling, sports, and dance.  It is our intent to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to be successful at post-secondary endeavors.

GCPS literacy teachers and instructional staff are dedicated to meeting the literacy needs of all students to (1) achieve educational excellence and (2) graduate students who are responsible citizens prepared to succeed in college or careers.  Literacy instruction engages students in reading stories and literature along with texts that provide facts and background knowledge in areas including science and social studies.  The literacy curriculum is

  • Designed to inspire students to love reading, hone their speaking and writing voices, and communicate with the world.  It develops foundational oral language and literacy skills (e.g., concepts of print, phonological awareness, phonics, alphabetic principle, sight words)
  • Provide instruction in the 5 essential components of reading: phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension
  • Integrates science and social studies
  • Provide opportunities for students to respond to reading and apply foundational conventions and grammar skills

Intro Reading:

GCPS math instruction is rooted in the Standards for Mathematical Practice, which are habits that help students develop a sense of ownership and proficiency as they engage in mathematics learning.  GCPS elementary math teachers and instructional staff strive to provide students with a strong foundation of mathematical understanding that will be applied in later grades.  The math curriculum is designed to:

  • Allow students to develop math fluency and apply skills and learning in new ways.
  • Sets up a positive stage for learning and focuses on concept development which is made up of carefully sequenced problems focused on a specific topic that increases in complexity
  • Encompasses student debrief which is a teacher-led whole group discussion where students reflect on their learning by discussing their thinking and strategies.
