GCPS Serves Over 33,000 Meals to Children During Summer Feeding
The Granville County Public Schools Child Nutrition Program staff worked in tremendous summer heat, during times of heavy wind, and through rain showers to ensure every child in Granville County who wanted a meal this summer could have one. At 24 sites throughout the county, Child Nutrition served over 33,000 meals, including over 15,000 breakfasts, 17,000 lunches, 1,200 snacks, and 850 weekend meal packs. The weekend packs included breakfast and lunch for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, plus breakfast for Monday. While the drought made getting fresh produce difficult, the program was able to provide fresh Carolina peaches as part of the meals. The 18 staff members involved in the Summer Feeding Program did not miss a single delivery day, despite the extreme heat they often faced.
Child Nutrition Director Meg Strong stated, “Our team enjoyed interacting with the community at our feeding sites. There were many days we could have canceled because of heat, but our team chose not to. They wanted every child to be fed this summer. I am grateful for the hard work our team put in to feed the children of Granville County who might have struggled to get food otherwise.”
Superintendent Dr. Stan Winborne echoed Strong’s sentiments: “The Child Nutrition Program did an excellent job this summer, going above and beyond to serve our community. Because of their efforts, ALL children throughout Granville County, not just those who attend our schools, who might not have had access to food, received meals for every day of the week.”
