J.F. Webb High School Celebrates Opening of Altec Innovation Lab

On Thursday, February 19th, J.F. Webb High School celebrated the official opening of its new Altec Innovation Lab with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by community leaders and special guests, including Altec representative Jeff Tingen, members of the Granville County Public Schools Board of Education, Granville County Commissioners, and the Mayor of Oxford.

The Innovation Lab was made possible after J.F. Webb High School earned the top prize of $10,000 in Altec’s first-ever Innovation Challenge, held in Fall 2024 at the Granville County Expo Center. The competition integrates science, technology, and engineering through student-driven, project-based learning, challenging teams to design innovative solutions to real-world problems that benefit their school or community.

As a result of this achievement, J.F. Webb has developed a state-of-the-art maker space equipped with 3D printers, laser cutters, virtual reality headsets, sewing machines, and additional advanced tools. The lab will provide students with hands-on opportunities to explore creativity, innovation, and future career pathways in high-demand fields.

Superintendent Stan Winborne offered his thoughts, sharing, “I am so incredibly proud of our students. They really won twice thanks to Altec. They won first through stepping up to prepare and deliver a winning presentation, which required courage, composure, and talent. And then they won again, with the prize money, which resulted in an amazing resource for their entire school that will be there for many years to come. Go Warriors!”
