Happy New Year GCPS families!
As we prepare for our return from the holiday break, help us remind children of the importance of our COVID-19 safety protocols.
Remember the THREE W’s!! WEAR Face coverings, WASH those hands and WATCH your distance from others are all important ways to stay healthy.. Health officials also continue to emphasize the importance of getting vaccinated to reduce the spread of infection.
We strongly recommend anyone get tested in the days immediately prior to returning if you have symptoms of COVID-19 or believe you have been exposed to the virus.
Use the link HERE to find a local testing site. There are two FREE testing locations at our school campuses that are open once school resumes (Butner-Stem Middle School and The Mary Potter Center for Education). Sign up for a COVID-19 test today if your child or someone in your household has any of the following symptoms:
Fever or chills
Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
Muscle or body aches
New loss of taste or smell
Congestion or runny nose
Nausea or vomiting
In addition, the Granville Vance Health Department has provided new guidelines for the number of days for isolations and quarantines. Our school district will follow the directives provided for any students or staff who have been exposed or tested positive for COVID. The new guidelines are as follows:
If you are exposed to someone with COVID-19 and are:
Not vaccinated – stay away from others for 5 days, get tested on day 5 after exposure, and if you test negative, return to normal activities while wearing a mask for 5 additional days.
Vaccinated and eligible for a booster, but not yet been boosted – stay away from others for 5 days, get tested on day 5 after exposure, and if you test negative, return to normal activities while wearing a mask for 5 additional days.
Vaccinated, and have either received your booster or are not yet eligible for a booster – you do not need to stay away from others, but you should wear a mask for 10 days.
If you test positive, regardless of vaccination status, and
Do not have symptoms – isolate yourself from others for 5 days, then wear a mask for 5 additional days when you return to normal activities.
Have symptoms – isolate yourself from others until you are fever-free and your symptoms are improving. You should isolate for at least 5 days since your symptoms began. Once you stop isolating, you should wear a mask for 5 additional days.
NOTE: Although the updated CDC recommendations, which Granville Vance Public Health has adopted as policy for Granville and Vance Counties, allow for end of full isolation and quarantine after day 5 please note this is only with appropriate masking at ALL TIMES when around others. As a typical school day may include mask-free periods including lunch break, at this time students cannot return to school until 10 days of isolation or quarantine has been completed. For students under 10, quarantine periods can be shortened to seven days with a negative PCR test on the fifth day after the last exposure and continuing to remain asymptomatic throughout the seven days.

We look forward to a safe and enjoyable return for all as we begin 2022.
