Accountability Under ESSA

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) is the latest reauthorization of the 1965 Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) and was approved by the U.S. Congress and signed into law in December 2015. ESSA, which replaces the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, reauthorizes the nation’s national education law and longstanding commitment to equal opportunity for all students.

Comprehensive & Targeted Support & Improvement Schools

Beginning in the 2017–18 school year, subgroup School Performance Grades and growth is calculated for the following nine student subgroups: American Indian, Asian, Black, Hispanic, Two or More Races, White, Students who are Economically Disadvantaged, English Learners, and Students with Disabilities.

ESSA

Title I

Title I, Part A and Part D- A Sound Basic Education for All Students

Title I, Part A (Title I) of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESEA) provides financial assistance to local educational agencies (LEAs) and schools with high numbers or high percentages of children from low-income families to help ensure that all children meet challenging state academic standards. Title I funds to provide additional academic support and learning opportunities to help low-achieving children master challenging curricula and meet state standards in core academic subjects. For example, funds support extra instruction in reading and mathematics, as well as special preschool, after-school, and summer programs to extend and reinforce the regular school curriculum.

English Language Learners

The NCDPI ESL/Title III Google site serves as a central hub for English learner (EL) educators, administrators, institutions of higher education, and other interested parties. This site contains links to policy, program and procedural guidance to help ensure that LEAs/Charter Schools stay informed of federal law and state policy regarding the education of English learners.

Title IV

Title IV: Part A-Student Support and Academic Enrichment

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) replaced No Child Left Behind as the nation’s guiding federal education law. It created the Student Support and Academic Enrichment Grants program (SSAE), under Title IVA of the law. This program combined several previously independent programs under NCLB into a single flexible block grant, supporting district activities across three broad categories:

Well-rounded: Providing students with a well-rounded education including programs such as STEM and computer science, college and career counseling, arts, civics, and International Baccalaureate/Advanced Placement, health and physical education, among others. Safe and Healthy: Supporting safe and healthy students with comprehensive school mental health, drug and violence prevention, training on trauma-informed practices, and health and physical education. Technology Use: Supporting the effective use of technology that is backed by professional development, blended learning, and education technology devices.

NOTICE TO PUBLIC AND PRESS

The Granville County Public Schools Board of Education will hold two public hearings on October 21, 2024, in the gymnasium at Granville Central High School, 2043 Sanders Rd, Stem, NC:

1) 6:00 pm- A public hearing on the proposed Closure of Granville Central High School and the Reassignment of Those Students to South Granville High School and JF Webb High School;

2) Immediately following the 6:00 pm public hearing- A public hearing on the Proposed Closing of Butner Stem Middle School and The Relocation of Those Students and the Relocation of the GC Hawley Middle School and Their Students to the Old Granville Central High School Campus.

Members of the public may sign up to speak in person beginning at 5:00 pm on October 21, 2024. There will be two separate public comment sign-up sheets, one for each hearing. Public comments will not be commingled between the two hearings: public comments pertaining to hearing number one will only be made during that hearing, and public comments pertaining to hearing number two will only be made during that hearing. Each individual will be allowed up to 3 minutes to address the Board. The Board will not respond to public comments. During the public comment period, the Board Chair will recognize speakers in the order in which they signed in. Substitute speakers will not be permitted, and speakers may not donate any portion of their time to another speaker. If a speaker is unable to present all of his or her information within the specified time limit, the speaker may provide the board with the additional information in written form. Those who are unable to attend in person may submit public comments in writing by using the following link: https://tinyurl.com/y37evl6z. Comments made using the link must be submitted between the hours of 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on October 21, 2024. A copy will be distributed to the Board of Education members.
