Parent's Right to Know

At the beginning of every school year, Title I schools must tell parents they have a right to request the following information about the professional qualifications of their children’s teachers. 

Parents have the right to know:

  • Whether the teacher has met state qualifications and has a license for the grade level and the subject area he or she teaches
  • Whether the teacher has an emergency or provisional license
  • What degrees the teacher holds and the field of discipline of his or her certification or degree
  • Whether the child is being taught by paraprofessionals and, if so, their qualifications

In addition, your child’s school must notify you if your child has been assigned, or has been taught by—for four or more consecutive weeks—a teachers who is not highly qualified.
