Substitute Teaching in Granville County
Changes effective the 2012-13 school year:

Effective July 1, 2012, newly hired substitute teachers will have completed a minimum of an Associate's Degree or have completed Effective Teacher Training (also known as Substitute Teacher Training) through the community college system (a 30-hour course). Substitute teachers hired prior to July 1, 2012, will have a minimum of a high school diploma or its equivalent. Separation from service will result in the need to reapply to be placed back on the substitute teacher list and candidates reapplying must meet the qualifications in place at the time of reapplication. After removal from the substitute teacher list, a candidate must wait a minimum of six months before reapplying. Substitutes who are inactive for a period of 12 months will automatically be removed from the substitute teacher list.
      The steps for being selected as a substitute teacher for the Granville County Schools:

A)      Candidate completes online application and contacts Lynn Henderson via email at upon completion.

B)      After the application has been reviewed, the candidate is contacted to schedule an interview and given instructions on how to download 
 personnel forms to be completed
before the interview.  These forms, along with the criminal background form, are to be brought to the

C)      During the interview, the candidate is given the Prospective Substitute Volunteer Service form and is required to complete 10 volunteer hours in
 a GCS classroom.

D)      The Volunteer Service form is returned to Lynn Henderson by the school principal.

E)       If the results of the Criminal Background form are favorable, the candidates are added to the list of approved participants to attend a mandatory
 substitute orientation. 

F)     During orientation, candidates will be required to view five safety videos.  Candidates will be tested and required to pass each test before
leaving orientation.

G)    If the candidate successfully passes all tests and meets all other established criteria, his/her name will be taken to the Board of Education for

H)   Once approved, the candidate’s name and other pertinent information will be added to the Substitute Teacher List and his/her name will also be entered into the e-School Solutions SmartFindExpress Substitute System.
