Hi, my name is Diane Garrison and I am the principal of Tar River Elementary School.

I’d like to share with you a few tidbits about myself:

• Growing up, I lived in many places including California, Washington, West Virginia, Colorado, New York, New Jersey, Japan, and Germany.

• I earned a Bachelors of Fine Arts from the University of Denver in Colorado, a Masters of Science in Teaching from Rochester Institute of Technology in New York, my Principal’s Certification from North Carolina Central University, and I completed my Masters of Education in Reading from East Carolina University in May 2008.

• I also completed an internship with the National Technical Institute for the Deaf in New York and my first teaching job was as a K-12 art teacher at the New York State School for the Deaf.

• Many years later, while an art teacher in New Jersey, I partnered with a reading specialist and piloted the Reading Through the Arts Program sponsored by the Guggenheim Museum and the New York City School System. I became the facilitator for the state of New Jersey with the National Diffusion Network offering staff development to school systems interested in the program.

• I came to Granville County in 1987 and have loved every minute of my stay. Matter-of-fact, this is the longest I have ever lived in one location.

• 1987 – 1990 I was an art teacher and lead teacher at Hawley Middle School.

• 1990 – 1993 I was the Director of Instruction at Hawley Middle School.

• 1993 – 1994 I was the Assistant Principal at Hawley Middle School.

• 1994 – 2000 I was the Principal at Creedmoor Elementary School.

• 2000 – (March) 2011 I opened Mount Energy Elementary School and was their Principal for 10 years.

• (April) 2011 - Present I am the Principal of Tar River Elementary School.
